When you start to monetize your website you will normally start out with the most basic or easiest provider that you can find, more often than not its Google AdSense. Now that is not a bad thing as you can make some really good money off AdSense, but a lot of people that get signed up with their initial provider don’t think about checking to see if the grass is greener on the other side. Most providers allow you to have the best of both worlds by using multiple providers.
Let me paint a picture for you, if you have a block of Google AdSense ad’s and a second block lower on the same page then the highest bidder will have their ad’s at the top and the lower bidders will appear down the page. This may seem pretty normal to you but think about the fact that if you have 10 clicks on 10 different ad’s in those two blocks you will be getting paid a range of high to low bids for that click. Now if you were to have just one block on your page then it will just display the top 5 bidders, if you have 10 clicks on the top 5 ad’s then you will be making more money.
Don’t believe me? Try it out and see what happens, this is one of the first tricks professionals do when optimising a website for increased profit. The second thing is to sign up with other providers so you can place their ad’s on you pages and only display a block of ad’s from each provider (by ad’s I mean a text link and text description, normally a block of ad’s will have 2-5 ad’s).
Once you have done this and found the best providers for you website you will then want to try moving the ad’s around the page to see if some ad’s will do better then others. Getting the best out of your website is really a matter of trial and error (a-b testing) because no two websites are the same (except for people that copy) and different ad’s work better for different sites.
If can give you one last piece of advice, it would be that you should look for providers with programs or ad’s that are the most relevant to your audiences. For example, if you have a web design forum then ad’s for web hosting and design software would be a good start, whereas ad’s for cooking and gardening wouldn’t have the same results because they just aren’t as relevant.
Enjoy.
